Roberto San Martin, M.D.

Roberto San Martin, MD, MS, FACS, was born and raised in San Antonio. He graduated from UCLA Medical School with an M.D. degree and completed an Internal Medicine Internship at the UCLA Hospitals. Dr. San Martin is board certified in ophthalmology and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He has been named by his peers as one of the “Best Doctors in America” nine times, and was most recently selected for the 2017-2018 list.

Dr. San Martin served in the US Army as an Emergency Room Physician and as an Assistant Professor in the Academy of Health Sciences-Baylor University Program in the Special Forces Branch. He received the Army Commendation Medal in recognition of his services with the Green Barret Medics. In 1980, he began his private practice of comprehensive ophthalmology in San Antonio.

Currently, Dr. San Martin is on the board of directors of Christus Santa Rosa Health Care. He has been an active member of the Bexar County Medical Society since 1980, serving on various boards and on the executive committee. The American Medical Association selected Dr. San Martin to attend the AMA Hispanic Physicians Political Leadership Seminar in Washington, DC, in 2008.

Dr. San Martin says that he can describe his vocation in ophthalmology in one word: service. Since his first year of medical school, he has placed service to his fellow man as his guiding principle.

“It is more than just providing the best medical care that I can,” he says “It is providing it with compassion for the patient as a person and as a child of God. In addition to my clinical practice, I have provided yearly ophthalmology service to the medically needy during two Medical Missions in Ecuador; two in Muzquiz, Mexico; and 20 in Oaxaca, Mexico. It is a distinct honor to work with such distinguished and well-trained ophthalmologists at San Antonio Eye Center.”
